Awareness itself

We cannot measure awareness. We can measure the moment it turns toward itself — the pause, the correction, the word said aloud. This page holds those three, and nothing more.

MEASURED · n ≥ 20EARLY · under 20, or smallHELD · belief, or a test written in advance

1 · What we can see, and cannot

Attention and taps — never the thing itself.

Awareness is the one that sees; it cannot be put on a scale. What can be counted is what it does when it meets its own reflection: how long a person pauses before saying “that’s me”, whether they correct the reading, and whether they say the recognition aloud.

One limit sits on every timing below: the clock starts when the truth begins, so it includes hearing it. Moving it to the end of the spoken truth is an app change; it has not been made.

2 · The pause · measured

Recognising yourself takes about thirteen seconds.

“That’s me” · median 13.1 s · 191 timed taps, 167 people · quartiles 3.5 s / 40.7 s

“Not quite” · median 22.2 s · 78 timed taps

28 of 191 yes-taps came under 2 s · 119 after 8 s · recognition is mostly not a reflex

A “no” takes longer than a “yes”. The clock includes hearing the truth, so the difference is the meaningful part, not the size.

3 · The correction · measured

Corrected, then recognised.

33 of 93 people who said “Not quite” to their first truth said “That’s me” to the second, sharper one · 35% · 29 Sep – 17 Oct 2026

The person’s correction outranks our reading. A third of those who refused the first reading recognised themselves in the next.

4 · Said aloud · measured, and rare

Recognition said aloud followed a yes — never a no.

Named, then confirmed or corrected.

6 · What we hold

Awareness cannot see itself. It feels itself.

The mirror is what it feels in. That is belief, labelled as belief.

Does the pause mean anything?

Among people whose first “That’s me” is timed, do those who answered after 8 seconds or more come back for another session within 14 days at a rate at least 10 points higher than those who answered in under 2 seconds? Fisher exact, two-sided, p < 0.05. Readable only with at least 150 people and at least 30 in the fast group — at today’s count (28 fast taps) the 30 Nov read will probably say “not enough people yet”. A pass would be co-movement, never cause. The clock is unchanged: it still includes hearing the truth.
